The blonde pushed her hair back behind her ears. The hot blazing summer sun hit her face causing her eyes to shine. Cassidy Taylors was now up. Tennis was always an easy sport for her. She’d been playing since she was 5 at her country club. It had been a mistake that she joined tennis. At the time, when she was 5, Cassie was supposed to be in golf class. By accident, she wondered into the tennis class and actually enjoyed it. But a lot of time had passed from that. Here she stood now, at eighteen playing for her school championships. College was about a few months away, and the scouts were here watching her every move. You’d think there would be a certain amount of pressure for this girl, but she pushed it away in the back of her mind. The whistle blew and faces turned to her. As she rose, she stretched her arms a bit to loosen up. Cassie flattened out her solid white tennis scourt and walked up to the base line. Things were getting tense now. Cassie looked her opponent into the eye. How she looked familiar. Very familiar. Like an old school bully. Cassie fixed her visor on her head. She tightened her grip on her racket and got into position. The ball, in her left hand, she grabbed tight. Now, the chills came on. Everything. She realized every single scouts’ eye was on her. Actually everyone’s eyes. Cassidy closed her eyes tight. She concentrated hard. She needed to win this championship for her school. She had to. Cassidy opened her eyes back up and knew it was time. She stood in her position, and threw the yellow ball up into the air. At about a half second later, her racket went up as well. Over the net, right into the service box to the opponent.
The opponent returned the shot with a clever hit. Cassie ran over and hit it back, then returning to ready position. The opponent then hit it hard and fast sending it straight at Cassidy. Cassie quickly returned with a volley without knowing that the opponent was going to send one back as well. Cassie was too late and missed it. Leaving the opponent to receive the first point. Cassie wiped the sweat off her forehead as she took off her visor. She headed back to the bench for a minute to get a drink while her coach gave her some advise. “Cass, look, she’s carefully watching all your moves knowing where you will hit. She found your strategies already. Look at her feet. She’s a little stubbly. Give her a nice high far one and she’ll panic.” Cassidy nodded while her coach spoke to her. She understood what her coach said. The opponent had found her own faults. Cassie picked up her racket and headed back to court. She faced her opponent once again. Cassie stood in ready position getting ready for her opponent’s next strike. It was still Cassidy’s serve. She took the ball and bounced it a few times. She threw it up and smacked her racket at it. The bright yellow ball went streaming through the air and right into the service box in front of her opponent. Her opponent hit it back sending it right to her. Cassie got ready and hit the ball back as hard as she could to send the ball way over. Her opponent, unexpected, ran backwards and was still able to hit the ball back to the other side. Cassie backed up a little, as she hit the ball back over the net. Her opponent was still all the way back at the base line. Cassidy knew she should hit the ball a little lighter so it wouldn’t go so far. And she did so. Her opponent didn’t realize and was too late to hit the ball, making Cassie receive the point. Cassie smiled. She did it. She won the point, finally. But the match still was not over. Cassie went back to ready position and got ready for the next shots. Time passed and Cassie did great. She hit the ball vibrantly and served gracefully. She ran on her toes staying alert for any tricks her opponent might throw. Cassie looked to the crowd. It was pumped. They were into the game. Cassie smiled back at them. Then she met eyes with another familiar sent of eyes. Her mothers. Her smiled greatly at her and her mother smiled back. It reminded her about how in a few months, she would be leaving her family to go off to college. She would miss her mother making her a big breakfast and giving her advice and making her bed neatly. Tears tried to burst through Cassie’s eyes. She sniffed a little to keep them back. She did a little wave, and Cassidy waved back. She tucked her blonde piece of hair behind her ear and went to the base line to get ready to serve. Inside, Cassie knew she was going to win. She smiled to herself on the inside. Yeah, I got this. And Cassie threw the ball back up into the air.
